Last time, we explored Hexagram 51, learning that when we avoid dealing with shock, we miss out on the possibility for amazing growth in life. Now, the sun is moving into Human Design Gateway 42, which we call “Increase.”

The 42 is in what we call the Abstract Sensing Circuitry. It’s all about life experience. We are here to have life experiences. Gate 51 shocked us out of doing things the same old way and showed us that it’s time to reinvent our approach. And now, the Human Design Gateway 42 shows us what’s possible afterwards, that everything can grow and expand from here.

Life always wants us to grow and expand, particularly in terms of the experiences we have. We’re not here to be in a rush to get to the next thing. We’re not here just to mark milestones—birth, marriage, death. It’s about every day. If we’re still lucky enough to wake up in the morning, there’s the possibility of something completely different and expansive. That’s what experiencing is all about. You don’t have to do the same thing twice.

If you have the 42 in your design, you’ll know that wherever you go, there’s the potential for opening up something completely new and different for yourself and others. And that’s a really important thing to remember, because the 42 is in the Sacral Center, what we call the Generator center and human design. And with the Generator center, there’s an on switch, but there’s no off switch. When you get started on something, you better make sure it’s something that really calls to you. Because once that fuse is lit, you’re going to have to see the whole cycle through.

Let’s take a look at Human Design Gateway 42 line by line:

First Line: Accomplishing

The first line provides the foundation for the whole Hexagram. And here, the line is called, “Accomplishing.” That’s the nature of the 42: great deeds and accomplishments are possible.

The key to the whole thing is to realize that you have this catalytic effect. And to do that successfully you have to be in touch with your own Type and Authority. And if you are a generator, pay attention to your gut response. Because great deeds are possible, but you have to be sure you are getting a clear “yes” before you engage.

You question your ability to expand in many directions on behalf of yourself and others. You might find yourself wondering, “Who, me? I can do this? I have this effect?” If you’ve got the 42 in your chart, the answer is, yes, absolutely! You align within yourself with inner confidence and certainty that grows in all areas of life.

All of us have reason to question ourselves. But when you begin to look within and question your ability to expand, you’ll begin to see that you absolutely can. You can bring about this growth and increase in all sorts of different ways. Go within to find the source of your gifts and abilities.

Second Line: Blessing

The second line is called “Blessing: inner attunement with what is beneficial.” Second lines live in a space of good fortune, provided they trust themselves. There’s a delicate innocence and natural presence to the second line. So, when second lines are in a state of growth and increase, they can be a great blessing to themselves and everybody else. But they must maintain the inner attunement to what is beneficial.

Being steadfast and sustaining your clear intentions, you receive tangential benefits. You’re just going about things in your own natural way, following your own sense of what’s beneficial, and suddenly other things start falling into your lap. By recognizing your Type and Authority, and staying true to it, you find much reward and acclaim just by doing your own thing.

On the flip side of this, if you’re less watchful, you are easily overwhelmed by the effects of others’ demands. People recognize this easy way you have about you, your natural ability to see what is beneficial, and they want to jump on board. They want to see what you can do for them. So just recognize that you don’t have to take that on. You are here for your own life, your own expansion that may or may not include others.

Third Line: Being Competent

The third line is always the experimental line. It adapts to new possibilities. It wants to jump in first and see what happens. And the line is called “Being competent: great wisdom is gained by learning from your ordeals.”

It’s about recognizing that you really can trust in yourself. You have the ability to bring about growth and increase. And sometimes you won’t get it right. You’ll go through ordeals and big challenges. Sometimes you’ll get yourself into some real messes. But you’ll learn from them. You’ll gain that wisdom and continue to grow as a result of those ordeals. There is nothing that cannot grow if you patiently persevere with clarity.

An unshakable certainty comes when you move gracefully through all trials and adversity gracefully. However, on the other side, you may embrace moodiness that easily throws you into despair when problems arise. You might become discouraged and overwhelmed when things don’t work for you. But the third line is all about jumping back in. How are you going to improve for next time? How are you going to make it work? How are you going to find that balance?

Fourth Line: Being Trustworthy

The fourth line is influential, always seeking to bring other people on board. And here, the line is called, “Being trustworthy: giving sensible counsel that serves one and all.” Isn’t it a great thing when everyone rises up together? When everybody’s on board, everyone’s receiving the benefits and having the opportunity to really celebrate in things going beautifully?

Your opportunistic nature often finds you mediating the fulfillment of growth for everyone. You have the ability to look around and see who’s with you, who gets it, and what you might need to do or say to get them to jump on board with the experience you’re trying to show them.

When you consider all aspects of growth, you find the way for great accomplishments. You see the cycles of things. You see the openings, the possibilities. You recognize all the potential things that can grow and expand around you. However, immaturity may place greater importance on the company than in the company’s achievements. Beware of seeking approval from everybody, wanting to get along with everyone. You’re here to open up possibilities for amazing experiences, not just to be liked.

Fifth Line: Being Kindhearted

The fifth line is always in this place of being able to oversee things. It’s the guide, the leader. And here, the line is called “Being kindhearted: unselfish and clear aspirations bring fulfillment.”

It’s about asking yourself, “what’s the possibility for this growth? Is it all just for me or can this uplift everybody else?” You can see the possibilities for growth all around you. And the key here is to open it up for others to share in it, rather than just take advantage of it for yourself. Your life is going to grow with this fifth line as well. But as your life grows, you have a great ability to take other people with you.

One issue to watch for is that it’s easy for the fifth line to get pulled into everybody else’s drama all the time, constantly rescuing everyone. But being kindhearted is one thing, being clear and kindhearted is another. So, remember, inner strength and confident kindness benefits everyone, including you, in sustaining growth.

Sixth Line: Balancing

The sixth line is called “Balancing.” It’s about maintaining a good mixture of giving and taking. Successful steps imply flourishing outcomes so long as you honor yourself and your journey. It’s a two-way street. You’ve got to honor your own way, while being sensible to sharing your own growth with others, ensuring the benefit of everyone.

On the other side of it, if you remain stuck in your own growth, you may actually proceed to deplete everyone else. We see this happen all the time, in the chronic imbalances in the world, the oligarchs and the peasants, the hoarders of wealth and resources. It’s just a call to remember that it’s not all about you. This is your experience, and a shared experience.

Growth and increase are available for all of us while the sun is going through gate 42. It’s just a matter of checking in and knowing how to catch onto it. How do you bring about a win-win situation?
