Last time, we explored Gateway 59, known as the Gate of “Intimacy”. Now, the Sun has moved on into Gateway 40, the Gateway of “Deliverance”. Gate 40 is in the Tribal Circuitry, which carries with it the element of support. Both supporting and being supported by a community, whether it’s a family, a friend group, a partnership etc. It’s also in the Willpower Center. And everything in the Willpower Center is all about values and finding out what has value.
So, you might say that the 40th Gate is the Gateway of a particular individual contribution within this complex of community and values. This is somebody who marks themselves out as being competent; someone who has the ability to commit to something and see it through to the end… and then step aside to relax, or at least commit to other more personal agendas.
So, with that in mind, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway 40:
The Personal Life Theme: Planning
Now, with the Sun in Gate 40, this is one of the three places on the wheel where the opposite Hexagram makes up the Channel (the others being 43-23, and 20-34). Here we have 40-37, which is the Channel of Community. So, this makes up the foundation of this particular Life Theme of “Planning”.
- Gate 40 – Deliverance – Using willpower to differentiate between struggle and liberation, you attain what you want.
- Gate 37 – Family – Clear interrelationships are necessary for the stability and wellbeing of everyone.
- Gate 16 – Selectivity – The ability to evaluate and identify endeavors that have relevance and promise.
- Gate 9 – Applied Details – An inherent attentiveness to everything, whether it brings satisfaction or not.
Now, we have the Unconscious Sun in Gate 16 and the Unconscious Earth in Gate 9, which are both logical Gates, which means they’re future-facing. Gate 16 looks at things in terms of their potential. It can immediately recognize what has a future and what doesn’t. It’s an instant recognition. It also carries with it the potentially much-needed skill to let people down gently when something just isn’t going to work out or needs substantial adjustments. If they are rude personally about people’s efforts, then they will quickly lose friends. And Gate 9, the Gateway of Details, sees what’s needed in order to put together a plan and move things forward.
This is a really unusual Life Theme in that the Conscious Sun and Earth are in this Channel of Community, which is 100 percent tribal, and the Unconscious Gateways have nothing to do with the tribe at all. They’re logical and in the Collective Circuitry. And the Tribal and the Collective are like oil and water, they never quite blend. So, people with this Life Theme are always caught in this balance between doing things on behalf of their immediate circle (their family, community, clients, friends, etc.) or on behalf of the broader collective future.
I always say that if you have this Life Theme, it’s almost like trying to ride two horses at once. If you’re only focused on the family and the tribal side of things, the collective is going to get upset, but if you’re only involved in the collective side of things—the rules and logical progression of things—then the tribe is likely to get upset. So how do you find the balance. That’s the trick here. Who are you planning for? How is the future you’re working toward going to be set up in a way that benefits everybody?
Notable people with this Life Theme: Michael Jackson, Lily Tomlin, Cameron Diaz and Richard Gere.
The Fixed Life Theme: Denial
The Sun moves on into the 4th line of Gates 40 and 37, which brings us into the Fixed Life Theme of “Denial”. The 4th line is willful and interested in heartfelt connections. And the 40-37 Channel is very interested in touch and tactility. How do we touch each other? Do we offer a firm handshake or a wet fish handshake? When we hug, do we fully embrace eachother or do we just offer a cursory pat on the back? In a sense, touch, familiarity, and proximity are the essence of community.
So, this particular Life Theme is very set on this idea of connection and community. It’s always looking out for who connects and who doesn’t, who makes that bond and who doesn’t. We call it “Denial” because people with this Life Theme often have a lot of trouble with long-term relationships, especially if their partner can’t stay within the certain bounds of how they interact.
- Gate 40 – Deliverance – Using willpower to differentiate between struggle and liberations, you attain what you want.
- Gate 37 – Family – Clear interrelationships are necessary for the stability and wellbeing of everyone.
- Gate 35 – Progress – Advancing, through experience, in an unceasing drive to explore every aspect of human nature.
- Gate 5 – Waiting – All aspects of life are subject to the rhythm and timing of the Universe.
On the Unconscious side we see Gates 35 and 5. Gate 35 is the Gateway of “Progress.” It’s looking to move one, to explore and find something different. Gate 5 is called “Waiting,” and it’s the Gateway of patience and Universal timing.
All 4th lines are invested in making heartfelt connections, so people with this Life Theme of Denial often wrestle with concerns about connecting meaningfully with others. They tend to exist in a space where they either get that full-on, deeply felt heart-to-heart connection, or else they’re going to move on. That’s why I always say the easiest way to get through to anybody with their Sun and Earth in a 4th line is with a good solid hug.
The Interpersonal Life Theme: Migration
Now we go into the 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, and 6/3 Profiles and we find ourselves in the Interpersonal Life Theme of “Migration”. And when the Sun goes into Gateway 40 with the 5th line, the migration is on. You’ll see that lot of people are moving house, a lot of people are changing their connections, finding out that their associations aren’t working for them anymore and that they have to make a change into something very different.
It’s a time of change and movement for people. A migration season, if you will. And this is not a good or bad thing, but it is a time to take a look at what’s working. How important are the connections that you have in your life? Is it time to change jobs or change professions? Change where you live? Find a new community? So, if you’re getting that urge around this time, just check in with it. It might be time for something new, it might not.
Notable people with this Life Theme: Salma Hayak, Charlie Sheen and Jimmy Connors
