Last time, we explored the Life Themes with the Sun in Gateway 38, the Gateway of “Opposition”. Now, we move on into Gateway 54, the Gateway of “Ambition”. In the traditional Chinese translation, this Gateway is called the “Marrying Maiden.” The marrying maiden is a young girl who marries into a station above her own. She begins as a concubine for the emperor, but she quickly realizes this is a dead-end position. So, through some clever maneuvering, she builds connections in the court and when the emperor dies, instead of getting buried alongside him, she rises up and becomes the empress herself. So, this Gateway is characterized by an ambition to grow in life, to expand, to come off the bottom of the totem pole and flourish.
With that in mind, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway 54:
The Personal Life Theme: Penetration

- Gate 54 – Ambition – Committing to our independence before making helpful connections.
- Gate 53 – New Beginnings – Gradually increasing self-knowledge and experience.
- Gate 57 – The Gentle/Penetrating Wind – You proceed gently while paying attention to your intuitive clarity.
- Gate 51 – Shock – Growth through disruptions and drastic changes.
This Life Theme of Penetration looks right into life and examines it from all sides. The 54th Gateway brings in this quality of ambition. It’s always looking for connections, looking for people that you can help it get ahead. Like the Marrying Maiden, it’s looking to move up in the world. It’s looking to better itself in both the material and spiritual worlds.
People with this Life Theme can (as the name suggests) penetrate right through things. They can cut right to the chase, right to the heart of life experiences. They can read people or look at a situation and get an instant hit on exactly what’s going on. And of course, if you have this ability to look into people’s lives and examine things closely, there has to be a fair degree of integrity involved. The drive of that ambition is a powerful thing. If you’re not clear on it and careful about it, it can take over. And then you run the risk of manipulating people or taking advantage in some way.
Notable people with this Life Theme: Nicolas Cage, Stephen Hawking, Katie Couric, Paramahansa Yogananda, Jeremy Renner

The Sun moves on into the fourth line of Gates 54 and 53 and we enter into the Fixed Life Theme of “Ambition”. This Life Theme only lasts for about two or three hours per year, but it’s very focused, very directed. And what it’s directed toward is shifting life experience. People with Gate 54 with the fourth line will often find themselves going through life just fine, everything’s nice and smooth… and then all of a sudden, the lights go out.
And the question is, what do you do next? Do you maintain your course, or do you shift into something different?
- Gate 54 – Ambition – Committing to our independence before making helpful connections.
- Gate 53 – New Beginnings – Gradually increasing self-knowledge and experience.
- Gate 32 – Duration – Adapting to the latest circumstances in a world of constant change.
- Gate 42 – Increase – Growing your inner and outer resources expands all experiences for yourself and others.
Looking at the Unconscious side, we have Gates 32 and Gate 42. Those of you familiar with Human Design will recognize right away that we’ve got a Generator Design, two Channels that are defined through these four points on the wheel.
Gates 54 and 32 make up the Channel of Transformation. And Gates 53 and 42 make a connection from the Sacral to the Root center through this energy of getting new life experiences in motion. So, because we’re looking at Sun and Earth involvement in these two Channels, we see that it’s all very cyclical in nature. Every year there can be a turnover of whatever it is the ambition is driving towards. Which means there can be a lot of stops and starts with this Life Theme. So, people with this Life Theme have to be very aware of their Sacral response when looking for guidance on where to go next.
The Interpersonal Life Theme: Cycles

Fifth and sixth lines always have a leadership quality about them. So, people with this Life Theme can open all kinds of doorways and reveal new possibilities for people. But they have to be aware of that Sacral, gut response. Every time they get a big “Yes” from that gut response, they’re going to get caught up in a cycle and they’re going to have to see it through all the way to the end, because once they start, it’s almost impossible to quit.
Notable people with this Life Theme: Kate Middleton, Joan Baez, Richard Nixon, Rod Stewart
