Last time, we explored Gateway 4, known as the Gate of “Mental Solutions”. Now, the Sun has moved on into Gateway 29, the Gateway of “Commitment,” or as I like to call it, the Gateway of “Saying Yes”. Yes is a wonderful word, capable of opening so many doors and kicking off so many new adventures. But it has to come from a solid place in life. Otherwise, it’s not so much “Yes!” as it is, “I guess so”, or “somebody’s gotta do it, so it might as well be me”. And that’s the danger with Gate 29: committing to things that really aren’t worth your while.
So, with that in mind, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway 29:
The Personal Life Theme: Transference
As the Sun enters Gate 29 and the Earth enters Gateway 30, we find ourselves in the Personal Life Theme of “Transference” (also known as “Contagion,” in the sense of passing things on into other people’s lives). Gateways 29 and 30 are both part of the Abstract Circuitry, and the Abstract Circuitry is interested in experiences that bring us fulfillment. If there’s no fulfillment, it’s just not really worth doing.
The 30th Gateway is called “The Clinging Fire”. And what this refers to is the desire within us, that burning desire we just can’t shake. Those things in life we just have to experience come hell or high water. Whether or not they’re “allowed” or “taboo” we just have to find out for ourselves. So, there’s a balance in this 30th Gateway of finding out how intense this fire is, and whether or not we’re truly prepared to jump into it, come what may.
- Gate 29 – Commitment/The Automatic “Yes” – Making commitments from a place of grounded sincerity.
- Gate 30 – The Clinging Fire – The infinite and unshakeable quality of desire.
- Gate 8 – Holding Together – Creating trust and providing outlets for novel concepts and ideals.
- Gate 14 – Prosperity – Embodying ease in situations involving resources of property, wealth and affluence.
The Unconscious Sun is in Gateway 8, which is in the Gateway of “Holding Together,” and it’s involved in cooperation, coordination, and getting people to contribute to a common interest in creative ways. The Unconscious Earth is in Gate 14, the Gateway of “Prosperity.” And prosperity, or wealth, comes in all kinds of different forms, from material wealth to a wealth of life experiences. And people with this Life Theme can find themselves so overflowing with this wealth that they just can’t wait to share it and put it out into other people’s lives.
That’s very much what this Life Theme of Transference is about. It’s like passing the torch, handing it off to somebody else because we’re so enthusiastic about it, because we’ve got such a big “Yes” about it. But in the end it comes down to the quality of that “Yes”. Is it a real “Yes”? Is it substantial? Do to you trust your Type and Authority to follow through on it? Or is it something you’re just going along with because of pressure or expectations from those around you?
Notable people with this Life Theme: Bill Clinton, Robert Redford, Coco Chanel, Rosalynn Carter.
The Fixed Life Theme: Commitment
The Sun moves on into the 4th line, which has a quality of embracing everybody and bringing people together. It wants to combine people’s intentions and get everyone on the same page. Which brings us to the Fixed Life Theme of “Commitment”. And what is commitment? It’s a full on “Yes!”
- Gate 29 – Commitment/The automatic “Yes” – Making commitments from a place of grounded sincerity.
- Gate 30 – The Clinging Fire – The infinite and unshakeable quality of desire.
- Gate 20 – The Now – Contemplating, watching, being present in the here and now.
- Gate 34 – Power – Great strength which comes from an inner balance.
Now, the Unconscious Sun and Earth have moved into Gates 20 and 34, and those of you who are familiar with Human Design will know right away that the 20-34 is the Manifesting Generator Channel, I call it the Channel of “Busy, busy, busy”. It’s also called the Channel of “Charisma”. If you have this Channel, people are drawn to you. They can just automatically tell that you’ve got the energy to make things happen for them, and they want to rope you in.
The Fixed Profile is always a very particular thing, and the sensation for somebody with this Life Theme of Commitment is that the commitment is total. When you’re in, you’re all-in, whether you burn yourself out in the process, whether you take everybody else with you, whether you have to go it alone. There’s an immense pressure, a massive amount of generative energy to fulfill the commitment, whatever it may be. So again, the big question is: is it a real “Yes”? Is it a sacral, substantial “Yes”? It’s something you’ll want to be absolutely clear on because once you start, you’re going all the way, and if you don’t begin from a place of sincerity, you could be headed for some serious burnout.
The Interpersonal Life Theme: Diligence
Now we go into the 5th and 6th lines, and we find ourselves in the Interpersonal Life Theme of “Diligence”. Again, it’s a Manifesting Generator Life Theme with the 20-34 Channel on the Unconscious side, so we’re busy, busy, busy here. But there are two ways of being busy: One is that you’re busy because you’re really, wholeheartedly clear that you want to be involved in whatever it is you’re doing. And the other is that you’re busy because you have a habit of being busy—whatever it is that comes up, you just naturally bury your head in it and get it done.
Again, we run into the key question: Are you really clear on what you’re being busy about? Is it coming from a place of clarity and sincerity? Is it getting that real, substantial “Yes!”? Or are you just getting caught up in being busy for the sake of it?
Notable people with this Life Theme: Ray Bradbury, Claude Debussy, Kim Cattrall
