Every now and again, somebody comes into the world who truly inspires us. Tina Turner was one such person. Known as the «Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll», she wowed us with her voice, awed us with her presence, and inspired us with her ability to persevere through incredible hardship. In her storied career, she received 12 Grammy Awards, appeared in several major motion pictures and was the first black artist and first woman to grace the cover of Rolling Stone. Her career spanned seven decades, and in 2021 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Through it all, she never lost her edge; that swagger that made her such a magnetic performer and personality. So today, in our Celebrity Human Design series, we’re asking “What’s Human Design got to do with it?” as we take a look at what made Tina Turner tick.
The first thing you’ll notice when we look at her chart is that there’s quite a bit of color in it. And the color is where things are turned on. These Centers are active and running 24/7. And we can see that they are all connected. We can follow from one Center to another in what we call a single definition, where all the Defined Centers are connected through defined channels.
So, it’s a singular design, which gives it an extra added bit of power. It’s not split, it’s not a bit of this and a bit of that. It’s very singular, very straightforward. And if you’ve ever seen Tina perform, or even give an interview, the words “power,” and “straightforward” should definitely ring a bell. So, let’s go through the basic Keys of this Celebrity Human Design chart:
Type: Manifesting Generator
Tina was a Manifesting Generator. And with Manifesting Generators, achievements are not an issue. They can pretty much pull off anything. The question is: What is it that’s really calling to you? Because if you find what’s really calling to you and you engage with it in the right way—that is to say, according to your design—you’re going to end up being fulfilled.
So, how do you go about finding the right engagement with things that really resonate with you? Clearly, she found her calling early on. She was a performer, and she knew it. She started performing in nightclubs at age eighteen and made her first record just a year later. However, that doesn’t mean it was all a straight line to success and fulfillment. Tina had a lot of false starts in her life. A lot of things that slowly took her forward into the extraordinary presence that she eventually came to inhabit.
Authority: Emotional
Tina had Emotional Authority, which means she arrived at a decision based on the way she felt about it. It’s one thing to get the gut response, but it’s quite another to actually navigate the waves of emotions that come along with it and get really clear on whether you want to get involved or not.
An opportunity can appear so enticing, flashy and exciting at first glance. However, if you just jump in without feeling it out, you can find yourself in some difficult situations. It’s important to check if what you’re responding to really resonates with you in the first place. Do the due diligence. Then check out how you feel about it. It will help you avoid some of the wrong turns and pitfalls that Tina encountered on her road to superstardom.
Profile: 5/1
In a lot of ways, Tina Turner was an enigma. And with her 5/1 profile, it’s easy to see why. 5/1s are a mystery. Nobody really knows who they are. They’re always two or three steps ahead of everybody else. They can be very visionary on one hand and wholly impractical on the other.
Tina went through all kinds of trials and tribulations in her life until she started working out her own formula for herself. She had the success already, but it clearly wasn’t working for her personally. She wasn’t meant to live in someone else’s shadow; under someone else’s thumb. What really worked for her was to be an independent star in her own right. And when she finally did it, when it clicked for her, she began to truly flourish.
Life Theme: Duality
The life theme for Tina Turner is what we call “Duality.” Just as the name implies, Tina’s theme is playing two notes simultaneously. On one side, it’s very busy, very driven on a personal, individual level. On the other side, it’s really involved in the tribal, the support of friendship and family. So, in a sense, Tina was able to spread herself very wide in terms of sourcing energy for supporting people, and at the same time being very intensely focused on her own career.
She had energy to spare, and she gave of it freely. From her days as a choir girl in the church to the pinnacle of her career as an unmatched and outrageous stage performer, everybody could see it, in her in her life and in her work, here was somebody that was just giving, totally giving, in the fullest possible way.
