Last time, we explored the Life Themes with the Sun in Gateway 18, known as the Gateway of “Improving”. Now, the Sun has moved on into Gateway 48, which is known as “The Well”, or “The Water Source”. Throughout much of human history, and still in many places today, the well is where we go to get the water that sustains us. And while you’re at the well, waiting for your turn to draw water, you might have a chat, you’re talking with the other people there, finding out the news, the gossip, the latest info. So, it can be a great exchange of information, an exchange of knowledge. And of course, depending on which well you go to, there’s going to be a different group of people and different news, different knowledge, different things of interest to refresh yourself. So, Gate 48 is associated with finding knowledge in this world.
So, with that in mind, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway 48:
The Personal Life Theme: Tension

So, on the Unconscious Earth side, we have Gate 21, the Gateway of “Control”, the Gateway of the “Hunter/Huntress”. And I always say there are two ways to go hunting. You can go chasing after something, or you can position yourself so that the game comes to you—which works really well if you are open and ready to receive it.
So, in Gateway 21, there are things that we really can control very easily (e.g. where we live, what we eat, what we wear, etc.). But the most important thing we can control is our attitude. That’s not to say you always have to have a positive attitude. It’s more about having an attitude of readiness. It’s the attitude of working smart rather than working hard.
- Gate 48 – The Well – Establishing and re-establishing access to the unending source of knowledge.
- Gate 21 – The Hunter/Huntress – Being very clear on what holds value for you in your life.
- Gate 39 – Provocation – finding your way through obstacles opens you up to personal growth.
- Gate 38 – Opposition – The individual stands for authenticity against unfairness and untruth.
The Unconscious Sun is in Gate 39, the Gateway of “Provocation”. On the opposite side, the Unconscious Earth is in Gateway 38, “Opposition”. These are both in the Individual Circuitry, which is all about empowerment. And in my experience, people with this Life Theme have a knack for being able to read people very quickly. They can read situations and determine whether or not things are in attunement in any given situation. They can instantly spot somebody who’s a little off balance, or out of integrity, and very easily call them on it.
So, this Life Theme is always bringing things into a state of authenticity, getting people up to speed. But again, you have to be really careful about how you put this across to people. What is the appropriate way to tell somebody that they’re off track, that they’re being inauthentic? Nobody likes criticism, but everyone likes the possibility of living in their highest frequency. Learning how to relax in this Life Theme is an art form.

The Fixed Life Theme: Freshness

- Gate 48 – The Well – Establishing and re-establishing access to the unending source of knowledge.
- Gate 21 – The Hunter/Huntress – Being very clear on what holds value for you in your life.
- Gate 53 – New Beginnings – Gradually increasing self-knowledge and experience.
- Gate 54 – Ambition – Committing to our independence before making helpful connections.
The Unconscious Sun is in Gateway 53, the Gateway of “New Beginnings”. And the Unconscious Earth is in Gate 54, the Gateway of “Ambition”. So, there’s a stirring in here. What are we really looking for through Gate 48? What is the ultimate knowledge that we can have that’s going to really enhance our lives and bring us fulfillment and a sense of connection and belonging here in life?
So, this Life Theme gives us the potential to open up new possibilities, to reacquaint ourselves with things that we might’ve put aside, things that we no longer consider important for us. Maybe the ambitions we had when we were young that never really got fulfilled. And right now, we’re in this season where all the Sun Gateways are in the Spleen Center, which means it’s a time of healing, cleaning up, sharpening our senses, maybe rearranging our diet a little bit, and really getting into taking care of ourselves.
The Interpersonal Life Theme: Endeavor

And again, we have the Unconscious Sun in Gateway 53, the Gateway of “New Beginnings”. So, we’ll see multiple different opportunities showing up in life, and a tremendous drive to get involved in so many experiences. And then the Unconscious Earth in Gate 54, the Gateway of “Ambition” helps us to recognize that we can actually go out and do these things. We can endeavor to get involved and to feel that drive inside to get out and really live.
Notable people with this Life Theme: Matt Damon, Vladimir Putin, Simon Cowell
