Last time, we explored the Life Themes with the Sun in Gateway 10, the Gateway of “Harmony”. Now, we move on into Gateway 58, the Gateway of “Joy”, or “Joyous Vitality”. In the current season, there are so many different societies that are celebrating all over the world. The foundation of it all is joy, and it’s worthwhile to remember to embrace this joy in our lives. It’s a chance to see past any cause to be miserable, or overthink our lives, or compare our lives with whatever we imagine they could be, and instead to accept and celebrate the extraordinary experience we’ve been given, step by step, moment by moment.
So, with that in mind, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway 58:
The Personal Life Theme: Service

The Earth is in Gate 52, the Gateway called “Mountain”. It’s the Gateway of “Stillness”. Whenever you need to tune into what is it that looks permanent and still and present, look no further than Gate 52.
- Gate 58 – Joyous Vitality – Embracing the great power and delight of expressing joy and celebrating life.
- Gate 52 – Mountain – Stillness, patience, and presence provide perspective on all life’s circumstances.
- Gate 18 – Improving – All traditions and customs need constant review to find if they are presently wholesome and healthy
- Gate 17 – Following – Theories, debate, and discussion temper all thoughts into base for concepts and ideals to move toward a potential future wellbeing for all.
The Unconscious Sun is in Gate 18, and the Unconscious Earth is in Gate 17. So, all four of the Gateways in this Life Theme are in the Logic Circuitry. And logic is always geared toward moving and progressing things in ways that benefit the world.
Gate 18 is involved in improving, specifically improving systems and the methods by which we go about things. Gate 17 is more thoughtful, more engaged on the level of thought, opinion, and conceptual understandings of how we might improve things around us.
An important thing to remember about this Life Theme is that it’s not personal, because logic itself is not personal. For people with this Life Theme, being of service is just a natural way of going about life. They don’t provide service with the expectation of being rewarded. The rewards may come in various ways, but rewards are not the point. It’s just an attitude, an energy of giving service.

The Fixed Life Theme: Vitality

- Gate 58 – Joyous Vitality – Embracing the great power and delight of expressing joy and celebrating life.
- Gate 52 – Mountain – Stillness, patience, and presence provide perspective on all life’s circumstances.
- Gate 48 – The Well – Establishing and re-establishing access to the unending source of knowledge.
- Gate 21 – Control – Being very clear on what holds value for you in your life.
Now, the Unconscious Sun has moved into Gate 48, the Gateway of “The Well”, as in the water source. Water is the essence of life, and it has a lot to do with our taste, our sense of the environment around us. Is it a tasteful environment? Is it one that we instantly recognize as being healthy?
On the Conscious Earth side, we have Gate 21, the Gateway of “Control”. It’s in the Willpower Center, which is directed toward what holds value for us in this lifetime. What is it that’s really worth guarding? Gate 21 is also called “The Hunter/Huntress”. And I always say there are two ways to go hunting. You can go chasing after something, or you can position yourself so that the game comes to you—which works really well if you are open and ready to receive it. So, what we mean here by “Vitality” is essentially placing yourself in such a way that life and vitality can find you. And that happens through this joyous nature and this stillness that connects us into the essentials of life.
The Interpersonal Life Theme: Demands

The Conscious Sun in Gate 58 with the fifth and sixth lines really puts out an energy of leadership (with the fifth line) and a sense of responsibility (with the sixth line), which tells us that it really is possible to experience this joy and uplift.
On the Earth side Gate 52 is in its place of stillness, holding its calm, quiet witnessing perspective. After all, why come down from the mountaintop if all that exists down there is confusion? If it doesn’t look like change is possible down there, why get involved? But if change is possible, then perhaps we can get involved and uplift the energy, and perhaps experience a world where people aren’t fighting with life, but instead they’re finding that inner stillness and that spark of joy and celebration.
Notable people with this Life Theme: Tiger Woods, LeBron James, Patti Smith
Elle Goulding, Ramana Maharshi
