Last time, we explored the Life Themes with the Sun in Gateway 35, the Gateway of “Progress”. Now, we move on into Gateway 45, the Gateway of “Gathering Together”. Gate 45 is in the Throat Center, which means it’s one of the 11 voices, or different ways of expressing ourselves through speech, that we have available to us. And this particular voice is saying “I have.” It’s possessive. It’s also the voice of the king or queen, the chief, or the ruler of the tribe. It’s focused on drawing in resources and deciding on the best ways to use and/or distribute them.
With that in mind, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway 45:
The Personal Life Theme: Rulership
With the Conscious Sun in Gate 45, we find ourselves in the Personal Life Theme of “Rulership”. People with this Life Theme tend to rule the world around them, they have a natural ability to connect into resources, money, etc. And rulership has a lot to do with the dispensation of blessings and resources. On the Earth side, we have Gate 26, the Gateway of “Accumulation”.
Gate 26 recognizes what it is in life that really holds value for us. What do we consider to be worth our heart energy, our willpower energy to provide for ourselves? And it’s a very important thing to realize most people are not in touch with what it is that holds value for them in this lifetime. Most people don’t know where to look to enhance their life. So, this particular Life Theme is very good at pointing out what to do with our resources to make sure everybody benefits in one way or another.
Gate 45 – The King or Queen – Gathering together that which best supports a strong community.
Gate 26 – Accumulation – Harnessing willpower and committing to great accomplishments and substantial rewards.
Gate 22 – Grace – The emotional energy of grace enriches life through beauty, benevolence, and nobility.
Gate 47 – Realization – The process of constantly filtering the contents of your mind to reach the “Aha! moment”.
The Unconscious Sun is in Gate 22, the Gateway of “Grace”. People with Gate 22 in their Design carry a certain degree of grace with them. They look graceful and they have the potential to be gracious as well. Of course, there’s an opposite side to grace: disgrace. We know certain rulers or people in positions of power who are absolutely disgraceful. They have no idea how to dispense resources in any good way for anybody else. And there’s something about rulership that can potentially bring this out. When we look back in time (and even in modern times) at people who have been in charge, have they always been gracious? Do they even have a connection to what it means to be gracious? Is their rulership taking place through a sense of grace? Are they offering things that are worthwhile for the community, as the responsible one, the one who can see what it is that holds potential value for people? And we’re not just talking about money, property, and possessions. It’s about recognizing that rulership carries with it a tremendous responsibility.
The Unconscious Earth has moved into Gate 47, the Gateway of “Realization”, or “Making sense out of life”. It’s a nice idea that maybe we could make sense out of life sometime, but life really doesn’t make sense. However, Gate 47 has to mull things over. It has a historical perspective that looks at what’s taken place in the past and sees how it corresponds to what we’re doing now. So, it’s one of those places in Human Design where an answer to a situation can come well after the question is posed. So, the Personal Life Theme of Rulership requires a great deal of patience.

The Fixed Life Theme: Possession
The Sun moves on into the fourth line of Gates 45 and 26, and we enter the Fixed Life Theme of “Possession”. On the unconscious side, the Sun has gone into Gate 36, the Gateway I call “Crisis Resolution”. It’s also been called, “The darkening of the light”, meaning the more you look at something, the more obscured it becomes. What happens when it looks like you’re not sure where you’re going anymore? Can you trust yourself to make a decision and move forward into whatever experience you’re facing?
Gate 45 – The King or Queen – Gathering together that which best supports a strong community.
Gate 26 – Accumulation – Harnessing willpower and committing to great accomplishments and substantial rewards.
Gate 36 – Crisis Resolution – The potential to feel a sense of crisis before moving into a new experience.
Gate 6 – Conflict Resolution – By monitoring changing emotions, you recognize the needs of any moment.
The Unconscious Earth has gone into Gateway 6, which I call “Conflict Resolution”. How do we deal with things without getting into a big fight about it all? So, this Fixed Life Theme of Possession asks us to be really clear on what it is we’re looking for. What are the values we need? How do we dispense them? How do we get through crisis situations? People with this Life Theme are going to be very good at dealing with crisis and conflict situations, but they cannot afford to let themselves internalize them. They have to be very clear that this is just energy that moves through them.
The Interpersonal Life Theme: Confrontation
The Sun then moves into the fifth and sixth lines of Gates 45 and 26, and we find ourselves in the Interpersonal Life Theme of “Confrontation”. Again, we have the Unconscious Sun in Gate 36, “Crisis Resolution”, and the Unconscious Earth in Gate 6, “Conflict Resolution”. So, we know that people with this Life Theme can be very capable of resolving issues for people. So much so that fifth lines get caught up in rescuing people if they’re not careful.
So, it’s the Life Theme of “Confrontation”, which is a word that can be taken at least two different ways. There’s the type of confrontation where you’re absolutely in somebody’s face. There can be a real ego energy in here, a push to get your way no matter what. On the other hand, confrontation can involve taking a more objective view, recognizing the potential for conflict in a given situation. You see that people aren’t getting their needs met. They’re not being represented. They’re not feeling honored in their lives. People with this Life Theme can look at all of this and say, “I can fix it. I can make this whole thing work”. But they’re almost always in this balance between having these fierce interactions, and having this more objective, laid-back approach to handling issues when they arise.
