Last time, we explored the Life Themes with the Sun in Gateway 60, the Gateway of “Limitation”. Now, we move on into Gateway 41, the Gateway of “Imagination”. It’s also related to the Start Codon in genetics, where everything begins. It starts everything off. So, in Human Design, when the Sun goes into Gate 41, we see this as the natural energetic beginning to a new year. So, I always recommend that if you’re wanting to make any kind of resolution or plan to expand in the year ahead, the time to do it is right now, when the sun goes into the 41st Gateway.
With that in mind, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway 41:
The Personal Life Theme: The Unexpected

- Gate 41 – Imagination – Living within limited resources opens the door for imagination and possibilities.
- Gate 31 – Influence – Interrelating and leading others through expressing your natural influence.
- Gate 28 – The Game Player – Embracing life’s challenges with courage, tenacity, and celebration.
- Gate 27 – Nourishment – Nourishment comes in a multitude of forms to meet physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs.
On the Unconscious side, the Sun has moved into the 28th Gateway, the Gateway of “The Game Player”. And what’s the game? Life itself. Anything can happen in this life at any time and Gateway 28 reminds us to play the game while we can. On the other side, we have the Unconscious Earth in Gate 27, the Gateway of “Nourishment”. So, the foundation of this Life Theme is how do we nourish ourselves, not just in terms of our diet, but also our life experiences? What are we opening ourselves up to? What’s interesting? What fires our soul? How do we really nourish ourselves in terms of what we read, who we spend time with, where we travel, etc.?
People with this Life Theme of the Unexpected are like lightning rods. They attract unusual experiences, unusual situations in their life. And wherever they go, they bring that energy with them. They open things up, they innovate, they bring new possibilities to life. So, all I can say about this Life Theme is expect the unexpected. Life is a mystery. No one really know where it’s going, so we might as well have an interesting lifetime. And that’s really what this Life Theme is about—being open to the possibilities and experiences that bring great fulfillment and satisfaction.
Notable people with this Life Theme: Alicia Keys, Diane Lane, Stendhal, John Belushi
The Fixed Life Theme: Fantasy
The Sun moves on into the fourth line of Gate 41, and we enter into the Fixed Life Theme of “Fantasy”. Now again, Gate 41 is opening up the imaginative possibilities of what can bring us, while the Earth in Gate 31 brings its very powerful voice of influence, which reaches into the future and shows us where we could be headed.
- Gate 41 – Imagination – Living within limited resources opens the door for imagination and possibilities.
- Gate 31 – Influence – Interrelating and leading others through expressing your natural influence.
- Gate 44 – Patterns – Acceptance and mutual tolerance are essential in any meeting of likes or opposites.
- Gate 24 – Returning – Cycles of deep thought give way to innovation and transformation.
The Unconscious Sun has gone into Gate 44, the Gateway of “Patterns”, also known as the Gateway of “Coming to Meet”. And there’s an important distinction here between coming to meet and going to meet. They are not quite the same thing. With coming to meet, there’s an instant recognition of things that are coming up in life, in terms of who you’re relating to, where you’re going, and what happens to you as you draw close to some situation in your life.
On the Unconscious Earth side, we got Gate 24, which is the Gateway of “Returning”. This is the mental Gateway of recycling thought processes in search of the truth. What is it that really adds up? How does it come to an assimilated point of view?
So, there’s a lot of energy in this Life Theme of Fantasy. And there are different kinds of fantasies we can engage with. There are fantasies that can become reality, and there are those impossible fantasies that are going nowhere, little more than daydreams. The trick here is in finding that balance between those two possibilities.
The Interpersonal Life Theme: The Alpha

The Unconscious Sun in Gate 44. Again, “Coming to Meet” with its ability to read situations. It’s in the Spleen Center, which means it gets instant recognition, an instinctual sense of what it is that’s worth pursuing in any interaction.
Again, we have the Unconscious Earth in Gate 24, this Gateway of “Returning”, where the mind is constantly processing, refining, pairing things down to an absolute, getting as close as possible to the truth at the core of whatever is going on. So, this is a very powerful Life Theme, the Alpha, and people with this Life Theme tend to know where life is going. They know where people need to put their attention.
Notable people with this Life Theme: Paul Newman, Ellen DeGeneres, Justice John Roberts, Mozart, Bridget Fonda
