Last time, we explored the Life Themes with the Sun in Gateway 55, the Gateway of “Abundant Spirit”. Now, we move on into Gateway 37, the Gateway known as “Family”. And this Gateway is very much concerned about the relationship dynamics and/or hierarchy within a given family (and here, “family” can be any social circle). It wants to know the pecking order. It wants to find out who belongs and who doesn’t.
With that in mind, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway 37:
The Personal Life Theme: Planning
With the Conscious Sun in Gate 37, we find ourselves in the Personal Life Theme of “Planning”. On the opposite side, we have the Earth in Gate 40, the Gateway of “Deliverance”. And together these Gates make up a Channel, the Channel of “Community”. Both these Gateways are also in the Tribal Circuitry, which revolves around the fact that we’re here to support each other. So, community support is the essential nature of this particular Life Theme. It wants to ensure that everybody is pitching in to increase the sense of wealth and wellbeing for the community.
- Gate 37 – Family – Clear interrelationships are necessary for the stability and wellbeing of everyone.
- Gate 40 – Deliverance – Using willpower to differentiate between struggle and liberation, you attain what you want.
- Gate 9 – Applied Details – An inherent attentiveness to everything, whether it brings satisfaction or not.
- Gate 16 – Selectivity – The ability to evaluate and identify endeavors that have relevance and promise.
Now, we have the Unconscious Sun in Gate 9 and the Unconscious Earth in Gate 16, which are both logical Gates, which means they’re future-orientated. Gate 9, the Gateway of “Applied Details”, sees what’s needed in order to put together a plan and move things forward. And Gate 16 can immediately recognize what has a future and what doesn’t. It’s an instant recognition of what has the potential to move forward, what needs adjustment, and what needs to be dropped altogether.
What makes this Life Theme unusual is that the two parts of it, the Conscious and Unconscious, are totally different from each other. Gates 37 and 40, being in the Tribal Circuitry, are all about support and community, while Gates 9 and 16 are in the Logic Circuitry, which is colder, more analytical in its efforts to move things forward. And people with this Life Theme will find that they’re either totally focused on the family and supporting the tribe, or they’re very much future oriented, which is why I often describe this Life Theme as like trying to ride two horses at once. Can you keep them going together?

The Fixed Life Theme: Bargains
The Sun moves on into the fourth lineof Gates 37 and 40, and we enter into the Fixed Life Theme of “Bargains”. Fourth lines always have the potential to be influential. They also really like it when people are on their side. They want to get everyone in agreement. And, especially with this 37-40 Channel, they want the family, the tribe, the community, to work together.
- Gate 37 – Family – Clear interrelationships are necessary for the stability and wellbeing of everyone.
- Gate 40 – Deliverance – Using willpower to differentiate between struggle and liberation, you attain what you want.
- Gate 5 – Waiting – All aspects of life are subject to the rhythm and timing of the Universe.
- Gate 35 – Progress – Advancing, through experience, in an unceasing drive to explore every aspect of human nature.
The Unconscious Sun has moved into Gate 5, the Gateway of “Waiting”, but also of timing and patience. The unconscious earth has gone into Gate 35, the Gateway of “Progress”. So, this Life Theme of “Bargains” is very particular. The bargain with the fourth line is that we are all in this together, and we’re all in agreement. At the same time, with Gate 5 we’re tuning into the timing of things, and with Gate 35, we’re looking to progress things forward, do something different, and expand our sense of fulfillment in this lifetime. So, this Life Theme is looking to make agreements that work for everybody as much as possible.
The Interpersonal Life Theme: Progressive Community (Migration)
The Sun then moves into the fifth and sixth lines of Gates 37 and 40, and we find ourselves in the Interpersonal Life Theme of “Migration”. This migration happens twice a year for a couple of days each time. And this migration can be an actual physical movement of people within a civilization, or it can be a more localized, personal movement into a different company, or a different environment, or a different community. It’s an acknowledgement that you’ve done what you need to do in a specific place or community and that it’s time to move on.
So, why does this happen? Again the 5th Gateway is all about timing, and Gate 35 is looking for fresh pastures, looking for adventure, looking for something different. And Gate 35 with a sixth line is very particular. It wants to know who fits and who doesn’t? Who wants to get this energy and who doesn’t? Who’s available and who’s not? So, you’ll often find that people with this Life Theme will get so far within a community, a job, or a certain milieu, and all of a sudden they up anchor and move on into something else. And it’s just a part of the human migration.
