Last time, we explored the Life Themes with the Sun in Gateway 63, the Gateway of “Doubts”. Now, we move on into Gateway 22, the Gateway known as “Grace”. How do we define grace? It’s something that expresses itself on a number of different levels. People can be physically graceful. They can move with grace, seeming to glide through a room. There’s also the idea of someone being gracious in that they have a certain poise and generosity and aren’t fazed by commotion or other people’s reactivity. Grace also has a spiritual connection. On a spiritual level, grace is the blessing that comes through having a seamless alignment with consciousness.
If you have Gate 22 in your Chart, you’ll know this sensation of grace flowing through you. It rises in you like a cool flame every now and again and suddenly you’re just in a different space. You’re in the zone. It can take you deep into meditation, deep into a sense of love. But the thing about it is that you can’t really define it or contain it, because the moment you start trying to intellectualize it and put it into a box, it’s gone, it evaporates.
With that in mind, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway 22:
The Personal Life Theme: Rulership
With the Conscious Sun in Gate 22, we find ourselves in the Personal Life Theme of “Rulership”. And grace plays a big part in rulership. The queen or the king, or whoever it is, has to be gracious, has to be stylish, has to be ennobled in some way.
When someone comes to the king or queen with a problem, it’s up to the king or queen to respond with grace, which can mean not reacting when someone is acting out in anger, or it can mean offering forgiveness, or simply engaging in good faith whether the person likes your response or not. And if you think of the rulers whom history favors most, it’s the ones who have been gracious, the ones that don’t react, the ones that engage with people and help them find what it is that they’re really looking for. These are the ones we think of as “good” leaders, or benevolent kings/queens.
Gate 22 – Grace – The emotional energy of grace enriches life through beauty, benevolence, and nobility.
Gate 47 – Realization – The process of constantly filtering the contents of your mind to reach the “Aha! moment”.
Gate 26 – Accumulation – Harnessing willpower and committing to great accomplishments and substantial rewards.
Gate 45 – The King or Queen – Gathering together that which best supports a strong community
At the same time, we have the Earth in Gate 47, the Gateway of “Realization”. If you’ve ever focused on an issue or a problem, and tried really hard to figure it out, but then later, after you’ve walked away, the answer just comes to you out of the blue, that’s the essence of Gateway 47. So, realization, like rulership, requires patience.
The Unconscious Sun is in Gate 26, the Gateway of “Accumulation”, which is in the Willpower Center, and seeks out those things which have the greatest potential value in life. And this is a major aspect of rulership: recognizing what really serves people, having a sense of responsibility and a natural ability to tune into what has value for people.
Speaking of rulership, Unconscious Earth is in Gate 45, the Gateway of “The King or Queen.” This is the person who has the last word. They have the responsibility of taking care of their people by drawing all the resources together and putting them out in a way benefits everybody. So, this Life Theme is quite powerful but comes with quite a bit of responsibility.

The Fixed Life Theme: Grace
The Sun moves on into the fourth line of Gates 22 and 47, and we enter the Fixed Life Theme of “Grace”. So again, Gate 22 is holding the space, while Gate 47 is allowing realizations to come through and fill out the whole picture.
Gate 22 – Grace – The emotional energy of grace enriches life through beauty, benevolence, and nobility.
Gate 47 – Realization – The process of constantly filtering the contents of your mind to reach the “Aha! moment”.
Gate 11 – Harmony – As harmony emanates out into the world, small ideas can yield big returns.
Gate 12 – Standstill – Being cautious and remaining inactive until the moment is right.
The Unconscious Sun has gone into Gateway 11, the Gateway of “Harmony” where small ideas can potentially expand into incredible possibilities. And the Unconscious Earth is in Gate 12, the Gateway of “Standstill”, which is in the Throat Center, which means it has a voice and what that voice is expressing is caution. It says, “Wait a minute, let’s reappraise the situation, let’s have another look at this.”
What makes this Life Theme particularly interesting is the connection between Gates 22 and 12. Those of you who are familiar with Human Design will know that these two Gateways make up a Manifesting Channel. So, all of a sudden, this fixed Life Theme of Grace is an emotionally charged Manifesting Life Theme. And what I say about the 12-22 is that it’s the Channel of Openness. It opens doorways where there are no doorways. You could be facing what looks like a brick wall with no openings or cracks whatsoever, and somebody with this Channel could come along and see a way through it.
So, like the Life Theme of Rulership, this Fixed Life Theme is very powerful, but, as the name suggests it also requires grace. If you’re going to guide people through brick walls, if you’re going to persuade them to follow you through doorways that they never knew existed, you’re going to need to lead with grace and be gracious to the people around you.
The Interpersonal Life Theme: Informing
The Sun then moves into the fifth and sixth lines of Gates 22 and 47, and we find ourselves in the Interpersonal Life Theme of “Informing”. Again, we have Gate 12 and 22 making up the Channel of Openness. So, we have this Manifesting energy that’s always innovating, always making things happen, while at the same time we have Gateway 11 bringing all sorts of new ideas into the mix. So, this is a very rounded Life Theme.
As the name suggests, people with this Life Theme are here to inform others. They’re here to let people know there are other possibilities, that they don’t necessarily have to stick to the tried and true, logical, traditional way of doing things. But again, can this be done graciously? If you have this Life Theme, you’ll find yourself turning people on to whole new ways of seeing things, which can be a shock. Can you do it in an elegant way? Can you do it in a way that uplifts everybody?
