Last time, we explored the Life Themes with the Sun in Gateway 21, the Gateway of “Control”. Now, we move on into Gateway 51, the Gateway known as “Arousing” or “Arousing Shock”. Every now and again in our lives, we get a big shock. Something happens that seems to stop time and completely jolt our reality. These shocks are wakeup calls. They are calling us to new possibilities, changes of direction, new courses in life.
With that in mind, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway 51:
The Personal Life Theme: Penetration
With the Conscious Sun in Gate 51, we find ourselves in the Personal Life Theme of “Penetration”. On the other side, the Conscious Earth is in Gate 57, the Gateway of “Intuition”. It’s a Gateway of pure awareness, specifically acoustic awareness, meaning it gives us a sense of when there’s been a change in tonality. It gives us a heads up when something’s a little out of tune. So, Gate 51 gives us the shock, while Gate 57 reminds us to tune into what’s going on here.
Gate 51 – Arousing– Growth through disruptions and drastic changes.
Gate 57 – The Gentle/Penetrating Wind – You proceed gently while paying attention to your intuitive clarity.
Gate 54 – Ambition – Committing to our independence before making helpful connections.
Gate 53 – New Beginnings – Gradually increasing self-knowledge and experience.
The Unconscious Sun is in Gate 54, the Gateway of “Ambition”, which gives us a push to get out there and do something, to make a move and make things happen. You just get this energy inside that tells you there are places you want to go and things you want to accomplish. How’s that going to happen? Who are the people that are going to support you and give you that opening for you to make that move? The Unconscious Earth is in Gateway 53, the Gateway of “New Beginnings”, which is in the Abstract Circuitry and provides the possibility for new experiences in life.
People with this Life Theme can read situations and other people very quickly. They can penetrate and get right to the root of what’s going on. They see all the parameters and get an instant sense of how things can move forward and how to position themselves so that they move forward with whatever the natural energies have in store. That being said, there is always a personal morality question when someone with this Life Theme is in the position to be able to take advantage of less-informed people.

The Fixed Life Theme: Shock
The Sun moves on into the fourth line of Gates 51 and 57, and we enter the Fixed Life Theme of “Shock”. There’s a heightened awareness here, because the fourth line is always on alert to whatever is happening. What’s influencing us at the moment? How are we all involved in whatever’s happening here?
Gate 51 – Arousing– Growth through disruptions and drastic changes.
Gate 57 – The Gentle/Penetrating Wind – You proceed gently while paying attention to your intuitive clarity.
Gate 61 – Inner Truth – Authenticity guides us to what we know to be true.
Gate 62 – Expressed Details – Expressing and defining details that are of value to the present and future.
On the Unconscious side, the Sun has gone into Gate 61, the Gateway of “Inner Truth”, which has the ability to penetrate into things and get a complete snapshot of whatever’s going on. So, people with this Life Theme have the ability to read situations. They have a kind of empathy which empowers them to go beyond the surface and probe really deeply into things. And then, with the Unconscious Earth in Gate 62, they also have the ability to express what it is they find. Gate 62 is in the Throat Center, so it is a voice, and this particular voice is capable of expressing the details and outlining what any particular shock is all about.
The Interpersonal Life Theme: The Clarion
The Sun then moves into the fifth and sixth lines of Gates 51 and 57, and we find ourselves in the Interpersonal Life Theme of “The Clarion”. People with this Life Theme have the ability to tune into other people’s lives, other people’s situations. They can tune into their intuition and determine how best to implement a change, a shift in their lives to get them pointed in the right direction.
Again, we have the Unconscious Sun in Gate 61, the gateway of “Inner Truth’, and the Unconscious Earth in Gate 62. So, people with this Life Theme can tune into the real story, the personal perception of truth, and they also have the voice to express it. They can throw open the doorways into different realities. For instance, someone who had this Life Theme is Ra Uru Hu, who brought Human Design, into the world—or at least tailored the Human Design system to the world. He was here to deliver a message and sure enough it came with a lot of bells and whistles. And his message will continue to guide many people on this planet for many years to come.
So, you’ll see that people with this Life Theme stand apart, and that is the nature of the Clarion. They have to have space to hold their megaphone and broadcast their message into the world. Their job is to transmit that something very different is possible. And all the rest of us have to do is recognize it, and if it makes sense to us, we can bring it into our lives to make it happen.
