Last time, we explored the Life Themes with the Sun in Gateway 44, known as the Gateway of “Patterns”. Now the Sun has moved into Gateway 1, the Gate of “Creativity”, or “The Creative”, and it opens up a very different season. In the Celtic/Pagan realm, it was known as Samhain—a time of celebration ushering in the winter in the Northern Hemisphere. We’ve also moved out of the part of the sky that we call Duality and into the Quarter of Mutation. So as we go through the months of November, December, January, and the whole winter season here in the Northern Hemisphere and the summer season in the Southern Hemisphere, we’re in for some changing waves.
So, with that, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway #1:
The Personal Life Theme: Directing: (The Sphinx)
First, we enter into the Personal Life Theme of “Directions”, also known as “The Sphinx”. Each one of the Gateways here (1, 2, 7, 13) are all related to our direction in life. And the Sphinx of Giza is aiming at the Sirian star system. And so, we have a kind of connection here, an indicator of an ancient connection, aiming our attention towards Sirius.
- Gate 1 – Creativity – Self-expression aligns with the natural expansion of the Universe.
- Gate 2 – Receptivity – A natural connection to unseen and sometimes inexplicable inner guidance.
- Gate 7 – Uniformity – Finding common intent and promoting shared future interests.
- Gate 13 – The Listener – Pursuing common goals to expand all varieties of human experience.
So, on the Conscious Sun side we have Gate 1, the Gateway of “Creativity”. And on the other side, we have the Earth in Gate 2, the Gateway of “Receptivity”, which relates to the receptivity of allowing ourselves to receive orientation in this life.
The Unconscious Sun is in Gate 7, the Gateway of “Uniformity”, which is a Gateway of working together, implementation through cooperation, and getting people on the same page. Next, we see the Unconscious Earth in Gate 13, the Gateway of “The Listener”, or “Fellowship with Mankind”. So, this Life Theme sets the course for us. It asks us to consider what it is we’re aiming towards as we try to get our bearings in this Quarter of Mutation in which transformation’s going to happen anyhow.
People with this Life Theme are very good at pointing out the way for other people. It’s almost like they’re beacons, lighthouses to guide wayward travelers in life. So, whenever we feel a little off balance or a little bit out of sorts, it’s always handy to hang out with somebody with this Life Theme.

The Fixed Life Theme: Creative Self-Expression

- Gate 1 – Creativity – Self-expression aligns with the natural expansion of the Universe.
- Gate 2 – Receptivity – A natural connection to unseen and sometimes inexplicable inner guidance.
- Gate 4 – Mental Solutions – The pursuit of the right solutions and the right timing for them.
- Gate 49 – Revolution – Abolishing the “old” and supporting a “new” which is aligned with certain principles.
So, we’ve got the Conscious Sun in Gate 1 and Conscious Earth in Gate 2, both with the fourth line. And now the Unconscious Sun has moved into Gate 4, “Mental Solutions”, which is about finding the quick fix in a sense. Then we have the Unconscious Earth in Gate 49, the Gateway of “Revolution”, which moves to look at things in a new context.
So, people with this Life Theme have a tendency to just charge into things. This creative self-expression wants to come through and get out into the world. It wants to recognize those things that could be improved for us and offer all kinds of fixes. It can be a little headstrong sometimes as it pushes its way into life regardless of whether anybody else approves of it or not. And this is part of the deal as we move into the Quarter of Mutation; we’re rearranging our lives in a very different way in this time of massive potential growth.
The Interpersonal Life Theme: Defiance

How this relates to this idea of “defiance” here is that the status quo is always going to try to keep on doing what it has always done, but this intense flow of natural creativity is like an intense act of defiance that can surprise and disrupt the status quo. My experience with people with this Life Theme is that they may go along with things for a little while. But the moment they’re free to move on their own, they take off in a completely different direction and fulfill whatever it is that wants to come through them. They’re going to defy the commonplace. They’re going to take things into a new level of creativity. So, it’s a very potent Life Theme for those who live true to their nature.
Notable people with this Life Theme: Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Leonardo DiCaprio, the Fall of the Berlin Wall
