Last time, we explored the Life Themes with the Sun in Gateway 11, the Gateway of “Harmony”. Now, we move on into Gateway 10, the Gateway of “Behavior”. In the I-Ching, this Gateway is known by the much more colorful name, “Treading on the tail of a tiger.” Imagine you’re out for a stroll and while you’re walking along, you happen to step on a tiger’s tail? What do you do? Do you freeze up? Do you run for it? How do you respond when life throws challenges in your path? How do you behave? Can you accept challenges, engage with them, and face them head-on? In this season, a season of joy for much of the world, can we really engage with life?
So, with that in mind, let’s have a look at the Human Design Life Themes associated with Gateway 10:
The Personal Life Theme: The Vessel of Love

- Gate 10 – Behavior – Finding one’s pace and place throughout the twists and challenges of life.
- Gate 15 – Humanity – In all of life’s possible extremes, there is a place and role for everyone.
- Gate 46 – Serendipity – Growth comes from being in the right place at the right time with the right attitude.
- Gate 25 – Innocence – Our natural state of inherent trust, honesty and presence.
Now, the Unconscious Sun has moved into Gate 46, the Gateway of “Serendipity”, and the Gateway of “Love of the Body”, which is the appreciation of the vehicle that carries us through life. On the Conscious Earth side, we have Gate 25, the Gateway of “Innocence”. All of us are born innocent. We sometimes engage with life in very complicated ways, but at the core of things we’re innocent. We’re born innocent and we return to a state of innocence when we die, regardless of the baggage we pick up along the way. So, the Vessel of Love is a reminder of that innocent, childlike, and celebratory quality of life.
Notable people with this Life Theme: Chris Evert, Jane Fonda, Carla Bruni
The Fixed Life Theme: Opportunities (Behavior)

- Gate 10 – Behavior – Finding one’s pace and place throughout the twists and challenges of life.
- Gate 15 – Humanity – In all of life’s possible extremes, there is a place and role for everyone.
- Gate 18 – Improving – All traditions and customs need constant review to find if they are presently wholesome and healthy
- Gate 17 – Following – Theories, debate, and discussion temper all thoughts into a base for concepts and ideals to move toward a potential future wellbeing for all.
Gates 18 and 17 are both logical Gates, which means they’re both geared toward moving and progressing things into the future. Gate 18 is involved in improving life in a very methodical, but also somewhat patriarchal way (i.e. “This is how we’re going to do things and if you don’t like it, too bad”). Similarly, Gate 17 can be very dogged, very fixed in its opinions. So, people with this Life Theme, when they see their course, they’re going to follow it, they’re not going to budge or shift their opinions. They’re going to go for it all the way.
Notable people with this Life Theme: Mary Stuart (Queen of Scots)
The Interpersonal Life Theme: Prevention

Gate 10 with the fifth and sixth lines is adept at engaging with awkward situations, while Gate 15 with fifth and sixth lines is invested in finding ways to help the people around them as much as possible. Gate 18 is bringing about improvements in its very logical fashion, and Gate 17 is putting forth thoughts and opinions on how life can be best organized for the benefit of everybody.
So, while Prevention may seem like a harsh name for this Life Theme, what it’s really doing is just laying out the boundaries of what’s possible, sensible, and reasonable because three of the Gateways involved are very much in the Logic Circuitry and logic is always geared towards making things better for people going forward. So, people with this Life Theme are looking to find the right way of going about things, how best to be creative and outgoing, and how to embrace challenges in ways that bring about the greatest potential benefit.
Notable people with this Life Theme: Howard Hughes, Helena Christensen, Ryan Seacrest, Ava Gardner
